Description: This document provides a structured, practical framework to guide Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs), whether new to the role, transitioning to a new specialty or health system, or currently in training, through the process of conducting a comprehensive gap analysis. The primary intent of the gap analysis is to support CNSs in systematically assessing their current state of practice, identifying strengths and weaknesses, recognizing opportunities and threats, and defining actionable goals to achieve a desired future state. Organized into areas reflective of CNS responsibilities, the gap analysis promotes a flexible, user-driven approach. It allows users to complete assessments in any order and tailor the analysis to their specific role and organization. Utilizing the gap analysis allows the CNS to be strategic in future goals and plans to improve practice, role effectiveness, and organizational impact.
