Cultural Competency: A Case Study Approach

Description: This webinar will present the case study of a Latina woman who was late to prenatal care, developed pre-eclampsia, and subsequently had an infant in the neonatal intensive care unit. The patient’s cultural beliefs influencing care decisions, pathophysiology, risk factors, pharmacologic interventions and collaborative management of a woman with pre-eclampsia related to this case will be discussed. Advanced pharmacology content related to Magnesium therapy and antihypertensives will be discussed.
Objectives: At the end of this lecture, the learner will be able to describe two unique considerations for the Latina patient experiencing a high-risk pregnancy.
Speaker: Kelly Kubisen, MSN, RN, ACCNS-N, RNC-NIC, C-ELBW
Kelly Kubisen started her nursing career in the neonatal intensive care unit, before becoming a perinatal clinical educator in 2020. She received her Master of Science in Nursing from Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences and graduated from East Carolina University in 2023 with a Neonatal Clinical Nurse Specialist post-master’s certificate. She now works at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health Women & Babies Hospital in Lancaster, Pennsylvania as a perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist. Lancaster is known for a large immigrant and refugee population, and much of Kelly’s work focuses on improving perinatal health outcomes and minimizing the disparity index in BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) populations.
