NACNS created the CNS Academic Faculty Award to nationally recognize an NACNS member for outstanding professional achievement as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Academic Faculty. The award acknowledges a CNS academic faculty member’s commitment to excellence and innovation in preparing student CNSs and in implementing educational standards described in the NACNS Statement on CNS Practice and Education.
The CNS Academic Faculty Award was renamed from the CNS Educator of the Year Award in 2023, and is selected annually by the NACNS Awards Committee and awarded at the Annual Conference.

Gayle M. Timmerman, PhD, RN, CNS, FNP, FAAN
Dr. Gayle Timmerman is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, School of Nursing. She has taught in the Adult-Gerontology CNS program for over 15 years, impacting the careers of over 200 beginning CNS students.
Dr. Timmerman was the PI for a large HRSA program grant, one of the few that focused on CNS curriculum. The program grant strengthened interprofessional collaborative competencies in the CNS curriculum and outcomes from the grant were widely disseminated.
One of her teaching innovations focuses on teaching students how to improve their own reflective practice. Students, using specific criteria for reflection while listening to audio of their lifestyle coaching simulations, reflect on their performance and develop a plan for improvement.
Dr. Timmerman has served for 4 years on the NACNS Board of Directors and currently is a Trustee for the Clinical Nurse Specialist Institute, chairing the CNS Video Competition last year and working on the CNS Fellows Program Committee.
