CNS Educator of the Year Award

NACNS created the CNS Educator of the Year award to nationally recognize an NACNS member for outstanding professional achievement as a Clinical Nurse Specialist Educator. The award acknowledges a CNS educator’s commitment to excellence and innovation in preparing CNSs and in implementing the NACNS Statement on CNS Practice and Education.

The CNS Educator of the Year Award is selected annually by the NACNS Awards Committee.  Information about nominations for the 2021 CNS Educator of the Year Award is coming soon.

2020

Gayle M. Timmerman, PhD, RN, CNS, FNP, FAAN

Dr. Gayle Timmerman is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, School of Nursing. She has taught in the Adult-Gerontology CNS program for over 15 years, impacting the careers of over 200 beginning CNS students.

Dr. Timmerman was the PI for a large HRSA program grant, one of the few that focused on CNS curriculum. The program grant strengthened interprofessional collaborative competencies in the CNS curriculum and outcomes from the grant were widely disseminated.

One of her teaching innovations focuses on teaching students how to improve their own reflective practice. Students, using specific criteria for reflection while listening to audio of their lifestyle coaching simulations, reflect on their performance and develop a plan for improvement.

Dr. Timmerman has served for 4 years on the NACNS Board of Directors and currently is a Trustee for the Clinical Nurse Specialist Institute, chairing the CNS Video Competition last year and working on the CNS Fellows Program Committee.
