1. I have just retired my CNS certification but my license is still valid for two years. What does this mean – is my license still valid?
Your APRN license is through your board of nursing. If you retired your CNS certification, you should notify your state board so they can make that change to your APRN license.
2. Can a CNS work in an outpatient wound center?
Yes, a CNS can work in an outpatient wound center if they have the licensure, education, and training in this area and your state board rules and regulations.
3. I have my master’s in Nursing Education. I worked for almost two years as a nurse educator and am currently practicing as a NICU Assistant Nurse Manager. What do I need to do to obtain my CNS certification?
To become a CNS, you need to apply for a CNS program. You could consider a Master’s or postmaster’s CNS program (resulting in a DNP). I would explore available online and hybrid programs on the NACNS website to see what program is right for you.
4. I have a master’s in Nursing Sciences as a Clinical Specialist Adult Criticare and a secondary role in administration. What is the next step to achieve certification? Can I open my own practice with that degree?
You need to schedule the ANCC CNS certification exam. Once you pass the exam, you are a certified CNS. Practice is determined by your state board of nursing. Review their regulations to see if an APRN can own a practice in your state.
5. What would be the benchmark number of educators per staff member in an outpatient setting?
We do not have evidence to support a benchmark number of educators in outpatient settings. You should poll other settings to see what ratios they use and review the literature for guidance.
